Mark 1:16-18 (Common
English Bible) Jesus Calls His Disciples
16 As Jesus passed alongside the Galilee Sea, he saw two brothers, Simon and Andrew, throwing fishing nets into the sea, for they were fishermen. 17 “Come, follow me,” he said, “and I’ll show you how to fish for people.” 18 Right away, they left their nets and followed him.

Do you get a sense of the rawness
of their courage? To stand up and step out is in itself an inspiration and
challenge to us all. Musical chairs of another kind. God has raised up a group
of friends to change the world. Friends of Christ – when you know who you are –
you’ll know what to do. They know their calling and ministry and purpose.
For a short time the chairs at
WBC will be empty – ready for another session – we can’t wait for their
arrival. They come with a reminder that the voice of God is as loud and clear
as it has ever been. God still speaks, but he is not going to compete for your
undivided attention. For some here today God’s personal most powerful word has yet
to be spoken. God is preparing you for what he has already prepared for you.
We are at a hinge moment in our
history as The Salvation Army in the UK and its not a time for playing safe.
Don’t live in the suburbs of what God has planned for your life. Never
underestimate the power of simply turning up and serving Jesus
This is not a day for bad news –
one day all going to die – doesn’t matter how many Zumba classes go to (Men) or
how much organic food each – die horrible taste in mouth – we must die loving
Jesus and in the centre of his will for our lives.
These moments come with a two
fold invitation – towards end of this celebration, there will be opportunity to
leave your chair and kneel at a bench, firstly to get to know Jesus. If you are
thinking, ‘If Jesus knew me, he wouldn’t love me’ – He does know, love and
befriend.
2nd invitation to
serve him – we need you – some here this evening know they are called to Officership,
those who are avoiding the call, and those about to be called
Most here are called to stay and
serve in your Corps. We need you –As Hybels said, ‘The hope of world is the
local Church’-
So then, It is time once again to
pick up our calling from God and run with it. It is time to fight. To fight for
something that is higher, something that is important. Our lives are too
valuable, our calling to great our God to good for us to waste our lives. God
uses ordinary people by giving them an extraordinary calling.
This is our time and opportunity,
we must not miss it. To God alone be the honour and the glory.
